In just half a decade, the role of TikTok has become significant as a source of news among young Americans – according to the Pew Research Center report. Based on the study a very low measure of 3% U.S. adults were into acquiring news from TikTok, where the figure rose dramatically by 2025, surging to 20%. The rapid 15% increase has made TikTok the most rapidly expanding platform among those studied.
The shift is prominent among youngsters who find TikTok the best go-to source because of the short video format content and updates based on algorithms. TikTok, which once remained a platform focused on entertainment, now has transformed into a digital space where journalists, influencers and others can post any content from politics to pop culture.
According to Pew Research, TikTok has evolved rapidly in the U.S., positioning itself ahead of other leading platforms like Facebook and Instagram, especially in terms of news consumption. Reportedly 63% of young adults often use TikTok, where news surfaces naturally on their feed.
This transformation has raised concerns regarding digital literacy, authenticity of digital platforms and the impact of the algorithms that these platforms make use of. People these days prioritize gaining more likes and views in social media rather than making content authentic. The American understanding of the world imbibed from TikTok equally remains a concern along with the rapid evolution that the platform has undergone.
